The Story So Far
And we're substacking. Hi, I'm Japheth.
Hi, I’m Japheth [ ˈjā-fəth ]. I write SFF-leaning fiction — usually quiet, a bit strange, and dark around the edges.
Over the past eight years, I’ve hacked at several unfinished science fiction and fantasy manuscripts like a dull machete through thick jungle. In the vacuum of my writing space — under the tyrannical eye of my perfectionist inner editor —progress has been, in a word dripping with understatement: slow.
Last month, I smacked the pause button on my novel-length projects and turned my attention to short fiction. In an attempt to preserve whatever sanity I have left, I wanted to experience the magical condition known as “done.” I wanted — nay, needed — to finish something. Please, God. Anything.
I made a commitment to myself, and the tens of patient followers of my fledgling writer identity, to share one piece of short fiction every week. I spun up a blog and Medium account to serve as receptacles for my writing, then ventured into Instagram Land in hopes of getting some eyeballs on my work. Along the way, I met some wonderful writers who had warm and fuzzy things to say about the Substack community — and here I am.
